How does Secret Santa work?

The basic rules
A group agrees to exchange gifts. Each person is randomly assigned one other person in the group – their giftee. They buy one gift for that person, within an agreed budget, and keep it secret until the exchange. Because every name is drawn exactly once, everyone gives once and receives once.
Two rules make or break it: nobody draws themselves, and everyone sticks to the same budget. A third is optional but common – exclusions, so that couples or people who sat next to each other last year are not matched.
How the draw works
Traditionally you write the names on slips, fold them, and pull one each. It works in a room, but it fails quietly: someone pulls their own name and says nothing, the last two people are forced together, and nobody can check the result afterwards.
An online draw does the same thing in one pass. The list is shuffled and each person is matched to the next one in the shuffled circle, which guarantees no self-matches and one gift per person. Here the shuffle runs on the server with cryptographic randomness, and the organizer never sees the result – so the organizer can take part like everyone else.
Setting a budget and a date
Pick one number and write it down. A budget that lives only in a group chat gets forgotten by half the group; a budget attached to each person's link does not. Somewhere between a coffee and a dinner is the usual range – what matters is that it is the same for everyone.
Set the exchange date at the same time. It tells people when to have the gift ready and it decides when the group's data stops being needed.
What happens on the day
Gifts go in one pile. One person hands them out, or each giver presents their gift in turn and the receiver guesses who it came from before the giver owns up. That guessing round is the part people remember, so leave room for it.
If someone is remote, they send their gift ahead and join the reveal by video. The draw itself does not care where anyone is.

- How many people do you need for Secret Santa?
- Three is the practical minimum – with two it is just an exchange and there is no secret. There is no upper limit, though very large groups usually split by team or department.
- Can the organizer take part?
- Yes, when the draw is done online and the result is never shown to the organizer. With paper slips the organizer can take part too, as long as they draw like everyone else.
- What if someone draws their own name?
- The draw is invalid and should be redone. An online draw prevents it outright – nobody is ever matched with themselves.
- Do you tell people who bought for them?
- That is up to the group. Most reveal at the exchange; some keep it secret entirely. The links here never reveal a giver, only the person you drew.
- What is the difference between Secret Santa and a gift exchange?
